Deputy Minister of the Interior says that the Al-Qaeda leader in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, was in custody in 2004, but let go, because no one knew his identity.
al-Zarqawi was reportedly in a medical center, being treated for injuries after being picked up by the Iraqi military. No one knew it was Abu Musab al-Zaqawi, so he was discharged without suspicion.
However, a U.S. general siad that the military was indeed informed of Al-Zarqawi being there, but by the time they got there, the terrorist leader was gone.
